Most patients require several appointments before an orthosis can be dispensed. Typically, there is a first appointment (assess, cast & measure), second appointment (fitting) and follow-up appointments as needed.

First Appointment

The first appointment usually involves an assessment, discussion as to which orthosis would be most appropriate, and casting and measurements are taken in order to build the orthosis.

Please remember to bring the following:

  • Doctor’s prescription
  • Health card
  • Relevant medical imaging (x-rays, MRIs)
  • ADP form (if applicable)
  • ODSP/ACSD/OW information (if applicable)
  • Old braces – to discuss function, likes, and dislikes
  • Shorts – to facilitate assessment and casting for Lower Extremity Orthoses
  • Bathing suit or snug-fitting tank top and shorts – to facilitate assessments and casting for Spinal or Shoulder Orthoses
Second Appointment (Fitting)

During the second appointment the orthosis will be fitted to you. Please bring with you appropriate footwear and/or clothing to allow easy access and visibility to the braced area.

Preliminary adjustments are made and the orthosis will be dispensed to you to take home. Depending on the complexity of the device and the adjustments required, more than one fitting appointment may be necessary.

Follow-up Appointment

A follow-up appointment may be required after your home trial so that your Orthotist may check on your progress and make any additional adjustments required.
